Lashkargah ready for security transition: Mangal

Lashkargah ready for security transition: Mangal

Jun 05, 2011 - 20:09

LASHKARGAH (PANinfo-icon): Afghan forces, despite a lack of resources, were ready to take the security responsibility for Lashkargah, the provincial capital, the governor of southern Helmand province said on Sunday.

Lashkargah is one of the first areas to be handed over to Afghan security forces by their international partners as part of the transition process, scheduled beginning in July.

On May 31, a delegation from Kabulinfo-icon, headed by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, supervisor of the transition programme, held a meeting with local officials to discuss preparations for the security transfer.

Governor Mohammad Gulab Mangal told Pajhwok Afghan News they had made all arrangements for the transition. He said he had a detailed meeting on the subject with Ghani two days ago.

Ghani also met local security officials during his visit to the city, the governor said, adding the team had expressed satisfaction over the preparations made so far.

"Our forces lack heavy weapons, helicopters, tanks and mine-clearing experts, but we are still ready," Mangal insisted. The team from Kabul assured them of all possible assistance in maintaining security of the city.
