Zahak's body flown to Bamyan

Jun 07, 2011 - 20:33

BAMYAN CITY (PANinfo-icon): Hundreds of people thronged the airport in Bamyan City where the body of the provincial council chief, who was killed by his captors after being kidnapped, was flown in on Tuesday evening.

Zahak was found dead in the Qamchaq area of Siah Gird district in central Parwan province earlier in the day. He had been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on his way to Bamyan from Siah Gird.

His supporters waited for hours to pay their last respects to Mohammad Jawad Zahak. Chanting "Death to Talibaninfo-icon" and carrying the public representative's photographs, they swarmed the helicopter that brought his casket to the city.

A committee comprised of provincial council members, religious scholars and government officials will take a decision on whether to lay Zahak to rest in Bamyan City or his native district Yakawlang.

Meanwhile, President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned the killing of the council chief. He blamed the murder on the "enemies of Afghanistaninfo-icon".

A statement from his office quoted the president as saying the militants wanted to hinder development projects by assassinating government officials. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
