KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The government has decided to distribute national identity cards and passports to Afghan nationals living in Pakistaninfo-icon, Iran and Gulf countries, an official said on Monday.

To this effect, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR) and Population Registration Department (PRD) in Kabul.

Naseer Ahmad Andesh, administrative and resources affairs head at MoFA, told reporters that the MoU would help increase cooperation among the three departments so that national identity cards (Tazkera) and passports were provided to people in a proper manner.

PRD head Humayon Muhtat termed the MoU as vital for accelerating the Tazkera distribution process in foreign countries. He said the MoFA had earlier too distributed ID cards to overseas Afghans.

He said PRD technical teams would travel to foreign countries and would ensure transparency in registration of Afghan nationals.

He said 12 million people in Afghanistaninfo-icon held Tazkera while there were another 18 million people who had no ID document.
