Stop firing guns into the air, Karzai urges Afghans

Apr 08, 2011 - 16:10

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai has urged Afghans to refrain from firing guns into the air in celebration of weddings and other parties, his office said on Friday.

"Countless people have died and wounded as a result of firing guns into the air. The practice always carries a bad repercussion," Karzai told his countrymen a speech to the nation on radio, a statement issued from the President's Office said.

"As a result of such shooting, many houses, shops and crops had caught fire, inflicting heavy financial losses on people," Karzai said.

He said that firing into the air, a traditional way of Afghans to celebrate wedding parties and festivals, had a bad impact on the mind of children, elders and pregnant womeninfo-icon.

"Most of our countrymen have become sensitive with firings due to the decades-long conflict in the country," he said. Religious scholars and tribal elders could play a positive role in creating awareness among people about the disadvantages of firing guns into the air.

"We all should come forward and make a commitment to prevent this tradition in every nook and corner of the country," the president said.
