Amid fear of avian influenza, poultry imports continue

Jul 12, 2015 - 18:22

ZARANJ (Pajhwok): Authorities in southwestern Nimroz province imported over 10 tonnes of chicken meat in violation of a ban due to possible avian influenza, an official says on Sunday.

A couple of days back, officials of the Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon slapped the ban on imports of chicken meat and eggs from Iran due to the spread of the deadly avian influenza virus there.

But poultry import continue into the border province of Nimroz. Dr. Noor Ahmad Sherzad, director of public healthinfo-icon, said a letter dispatched to the Ministry of Public Health (MPH) warned against the use of Iranian products such as eggs and meat.

“The avian influenza virus has reportedly spread in the Mazendaran province of Iran and therefore the uses of Iranian dairy products have been banned in the country,” he said.

But Col. Abdul Rahman Sighani, a senior border police official, said they had not received any letter from the government ordering a ban on Iranian poultry products.

The Afghanistaninfo-icon Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) also denied receiving any letter from any government organisation that ordered a ban on the Iranian poultry products.
