International cooperation sought in war on narcotics

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) on Wednesday linked drug production to terrorism, asking the international community to show the same level of commitment to dealing with the twin challenges.

CJTF spokesman Khalid Mowahid told a news conference in Kabul international mafia was reaping wind-fall profits from 60 to 70 billion US dollars annually from the drugcommerce.

The drug cartels would never like to lose that huge a fortune, the official said, adding the illicit commerce represented a serious threat. He stressed the needfor regional and international cooperation in eliminating the scourge.

“Terrorist financing from narcotics is no a new issue; terrorism and narcotics are two sides of the same coin. Both have a symbiotic link: Narcotics are common wherever there is insecurity and terrorism,” Mowahid explained.

He also unveiled a nine-month CJTF report, which 598 people were detained in connection with 437 criminal cases by counternarcotics police and intelligence operatives.

Mowahid added the detainees included 37 public servants -- a number of them security personnel -- and 14 womeninfo-icon, two of them foreigners.

He said 4.5 tonnes of heroin, more than 19 kilograms of morphine, 124 tonnes of opium, more than 158 tonnes of hashish, 2.5 tonnes of chemicals, 1,317 litres of alcoholic beverages, 136 weapons, 270 vehicles and more than 500 telephone sets were seized during the period.

Most of the drugs were seized in Nangarhar, Kandahar, Kabul, Helmand, Badakhshan and Nimroz provinces. The recoveries showed an increased over the corresponding period last year.
