Pakistan a duplicitous US partner in Afghanistan: NYT

Pakistan a duplicitous US partner in Afghanistan: NYT

May 13, 2016 - 10:11

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A leading American newspaper on Friday branded Pakistaninfo-icon, which has received $33 billion in aid from Washington, as a duplicitous and dangerous partner for the United States and Afghanistaninfo-icon.

In an editorial, titled “Time to put the squeeze on Pakistan,” The New York Times also questioned President Barack Obama’s decision on reducing the American force of 10,000 troops to 5,500 by the end of the year.

“The truth is, regardless of troop levels, the only hope for long-term peace is negotiations with some factions of the Talibaninfo-icon. The key to that is Pakistan,” the newspaper said.

For years, it alleged, Pakistan’s army and intelligence services had aided the Taliban and the Haqqani terrorist network. The rebel outfits are relied to promote Pakistani interests in Afghanistan and stop India consolidating its foothold there.

Despite conducting a military offensive against the Taliban in its tribal badlands, Pakistan continues to let the Haqqanis operate in relative safety. It also referred to the view that the Pakistan army had helped engineer the integration of the Haqqanis into the Taliban leadership.

“Pakistan’s double game has long frustrated American officials, and it has grown worse. There are now efforts in Washington to exert more pressure on the Pakistan Army,” the newspaper added.

President Ashraf Ghani, who tried courting Pakistan for more than a year in the hopes that it would bring the Taliban to the negotiating table, is also getting tougher with Pakistani leaders.
