3 Badakhshan districts sliding into chaos, warn public rep

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Badakhshan provincial council, concerned at Talibaninfo-icon’s growing activities, on Friday warned three districts of the province would slide into chaos if appropriate measures were not taken to rein in the insurgents.

The public representative said that parts of Warduj, Yamgan Juram district had been under Taliban’s control for a year. The Afghan insurgents were being aided by foreign fighters who had sneaked into the eastern province, they alleged.

Ahmad Bashir Samim, head of the provincial council, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants had recently stepped up their activities in previously secure areas.

More than 200 rebels in the Yamchyan area of Darayem district were extorting Zakatinfo-icon, Ushr and financial support from residents, he alleged, accusing the fighters of creating unrest and harassing locals.

With the Taliban presence and meetings in the Piazi neighbourhood of Orgu district on the rise, he said the security situation in Khash town had also been on the nosedive.

“I would like to urge the authorities concerned to clear Yamgan and Warduj districts of the insurgents; otherwise the towns will soon become insecure,” Samim remarked, calling for military action against the Taliban.

Samiullah Saihoon, a civil societyinfo-icon activist, blasted the government was wasting time by wooing the Taliban to the negotiating table. “If the government continues to ignore Badakhshan, the militants will further expand their operations,” he warned.

But Badakhshan police chief, Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Ghafoori said they were working on an operational plan to stabilise the restive areas and vanquish the Taliban and their allies.
