Badakhshan pistachio forests being revived

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Badakhshan Agricultureinfo-icon Department on Monday announced 100-hectare pistachio forests were being rehabilitated in the northeastern province.

In the past, Badakhshan had 30,000 hectares of pistachio forests, but 30 percent of them have been destroyed as a result of fighting in the country.

The natural resources manager at the department described forests as a national asset and said rehabilitation of pistachio jungles was ongoing in five districts of Badakhshan.

Noor Mohammad told Pajhwok Afghan News they were trying to revive the damaged pistachio jungles and help add to farmers’ income and increase greeneryin the area.

He said planting pistachios had been underway in Yaftal Payeen, Shahr-i-Bozarg, Argo, Darayem and Kashm districts for the past four years.

Mohammad added 41,000 pistachio plants had been planted over the past four years, a process that is still underway.The plants are protected by local residents and councils.

Azizullah, hailing from Yaftal Payeen district, called the rehabilitation of pistachio forests vital to people’s wellbeing. “Our people would get benefits from the revival of these forests.”

Sharafuddin, a resident of Argo district, claimed local inhabitants had always tried to protect pistachio forests and cooperate with the Agriculture Department in this regard.
