Taliban have shut 8 schools in Logar, says official

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The Talibaninfo-icon have closed eight schools in central Logar province, educationinfo-icon officials said on Sunday. However, the militant movement rejected the claim as baseless.

Education Department spokesman Mohammad Shahpoor Arab told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban had closed one high and three intermediate schools for boys and three intermediate schools for girls in Mohammad Agha district.

As many as 2,000 students had been deprived of education by the closure of schools, he said, adding local elders had been tasked with talking to the Taliban on the reopening of the facilities.

Haji Atal, a local elder from Surkhab district, confirmed the Taliban the closure of eight schools in the area.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid spurned the claim, promising the group would investigate the issue to ascertain who had closed the school.

As many as 307 education facilities are functional in Logar, where 150,000 students are enrolled, including 50,000 girls.
