We firmly believe in intra-Afghan dialogue: Ghani

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday said he didn’t want others to help achieve peace because he believes in intra-Afghan negotiations.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said President Ghani today held a meeting with High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC) head Pir Sayed Ahmad Gilani.

The president thanked Gilani and his delegation for successfully concluding peace talks with the Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA).

The president called the successful peace negotiations with HIA as a major step and said: “We have always said we don’t want peace from others because we just believe in intra-Afghan negotiations.”

Ghani said Afghans proved to the worldinfo-icon they had a determined commitment to a legal and honorable peace and all Afghans and the international community firmly supported the HPC’s intra-Afghan talks with the HIA.

The successful peace negotiations with the HIA was a good start in ensuring peace and the peace process would continue, the president said, adding he resolutely supported implementation of the inked peace deal with the HIA.

Gilani, paying gratitude to President Ghani for his firm determination, commitment and special attention to peace, thanked all those who contributed to the effort and said peace was a divine order.

He called peace a principle for permanent stability in Afghanistan and said peace negotiations with HIA occurred with national consensus and with all political and national figures in attendance.  

Gilani said he was working on a core strategy for peace so that all armed insurgents return to a peaceful and ordinary life. The HPC planned to organize a national peace conference in the near future.

The Ashraf Ghani administration and the HIA signed a landmark peace deal after two years of negotiations on Sept 22.

On behalf of the government, the agreement was inked by High Peace Council (HPC) Chairman Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani and National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar.
