PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Local officials on Saturday said the alternative road leading to Azra district of central Logar province has also been closed for public traffic due to security problems.

Hamidullah Hamid, the town’s administrative chief, in an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News said few months ago an alternative road connecting Azra with Khaki Jabbar district of Kabulinfo-icon province was inaugurated after construction to felicitate the residents, but no vehicle could move on it over the past few weeks.

“The Afghan forces have removed their posts on the alternative road because they did not receive equipments and food on time, but local residents do not travel on the route due to roadside bombs and militants’ threat,” he said.

The construction process of development projects in the district have also been suspended because all the supplies had passed through the alternative road, Hamid added.

A provincial council member, Abdul Wali Wakil also said that security threats have increased on the alternative way to Azra district and local residents could not travel on it.

“The implementation of nearly 30 development projects have been suspended due to absence of needed materials, Talibaninfo-icon militants do not allow construction companies to transfer supplies for the projects,” he said.

Zarifullah, a resident of Akbarkhel area of the district said that all roads to Azra have been closed due to security problems.

“People did not feel fear when there were security posts on the road, but after the posts removed, now people cannot travel to Kabul or Pul-I-Alam City,” he said.

He asked officials concerned to reopen the road for traffic as soon as possible.

However, governor’s spokesman, Salim Saleh said the road to Azra district was open and people could use it for their movements.

“Security posts on the road removed due to the weather got cold but the route is open for all traffics,” he said.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid previously said the roads were blocked only for Afghan forces not for public.

The main road of Azra to Pul-I-Alam, the provincial capital has been blocked due to security problems for the past 14 years.

Residents of the district had to travel through eastern Nangarhar province for reaching Pul-I-Alam City.
