MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Afghan security forces frustrated Talibaninfo-icon’s plan to capture two districts of eastern Laghman province, killing and wounding 40 insurgents during an operation, the governor said on Thursday.

Abdul Jabbar Naeemi told a news conference here that the enemy yesterday attempted to capture some security posts in Alingar and Alishang districts in order to block roads.

But Afghan security and defend forces jointly pushed the rebels back and inflicted heavy casualties on them, the governor said

“Our security forces have a high morale and a strong determination and they won’t hesitate from sacrificing their lives in the defence of the soil.”

At the press conference, 201st Selab Military Corps commander Lt. Gen. Mohammad Zaman Waziri said 21 insurgents had been killed and another 13 severely injured during separate clashes.

He said the ongoing operation involved air and infantry forces who inflicted heavy casualties on the rebels.

Gen. Waziri said the enemy was trying to attack security forces from civilian homes and holy places.

“But we try to avoid civilian casualties during clashes, and fortunately no civilian has suffered casualties during the operation.”

Besides the governor and the 201st Selab Military Corps commander, the 202nd Shamshad police zone commander, public order police’s 7th brigade commander and Laghman security leadership were present at the press conference.

Local residents said the security situation in Laghman was worsening day by day with insurgents carrying out attacks in three kilometers from the provincial capital.

Najibullah, an Alingar district resident, said three security posts were captured by militants yesterday. He said the situation would worsen further if serious measures were not taken to control it.
