HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of residents of western Herat province on Sunday blocked the Kabulinfo-icon-Herat highway for a second day in protest against the prison sentence awarded to the provincial council head.

A day earlier, dozens of supporters of the Herat provincial council head, Kamran Alizai, protested against the penalty and called the public representative innocent.

Two weeks back, the Anti-Corruption Justice Centre (ACJC) had sentenced Alizai to two and half years in jail term for misusing his authority in storming along with 20 armed supporters the attorney office and freeing a convict.

Abdul Qadir Timori, a resident of Herat City, told Pajhwok Afghan News Alizai’s supporters blocked the Kabul-Herat highway for a second day. “They also blocked the airport road that leads to Guzra and Injil districts.”

Another resident, Massoud, said Alizai’s supporters blocked the highway in Guzra district square. Roads to the Zafar Military Corps Headquarters, Ansari Police Headquarters were also closed, he added.

Herat residents asked the provincial council to resolve the problem themselves to avoid creating troubles for the ordinary people.

A day earlier, Alizai said the government should respond positively to the protestors’ call. He warned of blocking the Herat-Kandahar highway and roads to other districts if their demands were not meet.

Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, said the protest was people’s democratic right and the demands of the protestors would be shared with the central government.
