Afghan family of 5 granted residency status in US

Apr 19, 2017 - 08:52

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A five-member Afghan family has been granted permanent residency status in the United States, an American newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Last month, the family had been detained by immigration officials for two days at the Los Angeles International Airport. However, they were freed after intervention from lawyers.

According to the Los Angeles Times, US Customs and Border Protection in Washington found the Afghans eligible to remain in the US under the special immigrant visas.

Talia Inlender, a senior attorney with Public Counsel, was quoted as saying: “We’re thrilled that the family has been admitted into the US, but we don’t see any justification for why this happened. We’ve never received an explanation.”

Special immigrant visas were created for Afghans whose lives were at risk because of working for the US military or government. The family’s father has reportedly worked for the US for more than 10 years.

Upon their arrival at the Los Angeles Airport on March 2, the Afghans -- father, mother and three children -- were detained for 40 hours without access to lawyers. They planned to board a connecting flight to Seattle.
