CEO briefed on problems Afghans face in Iran

May 06, 2017 - 18:58

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): “Iran considers non-Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) and cards issued to Afghan refugees and students living there as invalid.”

This was told to CEO Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday by a number of Afghan refugees’ representatives, a statement from the CEO office said.

Abdullah listened to issues expressed by the representatives and promised serious efforts at pursuing them.

The representatives claimed Iran had recently announced it wouldn’t accept non-MRPs anymore. People who possessed old passports had been told to computerize the passports as soon as possible.

They put the number of Afghan refugees having non-MRPs at more than 400,000 families or one million individuals, asking the CEO to help address the serious problem they faced in Iran.

They went on to claim that the Iranian government had also warned Afghan students of invalidating their refugee cards after May 5 and they should have Afghan nationality cards afterwards.

The CEO was also informed about Afghans’ inability in Iran to perform Hajjinfo-icon pilgrimage. They said Afghan refugees in Iran who possessed refugee cards if once left the country and they wouldn’t be allowed to enter the country again.

They demanded the issuance of temporary passports to Afghan refugees in Iran for going to Saudi Arabia for the performance of the pilgrimage.

CEO Abdullah said the simplest solution to the issue of Afghan refugees in Iran was turn non-MRP into machine readable ones.

While promising to share the issues with Iranian authorities, the CEO said a joint session officials from the ministries of foreign affairs, interior, refugees and hajj and religious affairs was scheduled for Sunday.

He said the meetings would discuss remedial and needed measures towards resolving issues being faced by Afghan refugees in Iran.
