Jul 26, 2017 - 12:15

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): At least 26 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed and 13 others wounded in a Talibaninfo-icon attack on their base in southern Kandahar province, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said Wednesday.

A statement from the MoD received by Pajhwok Afghan News, said the ANA base came under attack in Khakrez district on Tuesday night.

MoD spokesman Maj. Gen. Dawlat Waziri said 26 ANA soldiers were killed and 13 others wounded in the attack.

He said 80 Taliban militants also suffered casualties in Afghan forces’ retaliatory attack.

Earlier, Maj. Ahmad Sadiq, a spokesman for 205 Atal Military Corps in Kandahar, said the militants stormed the crops base in Karzani area of Khakrez district.

He said a number of ANA soldiers suffered casualties in the incident, but he had no exact figures.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed the rebels captured the military base and killed and wounded up to 70 soldiers.

He said their fighters destroyed four military tanks and three ranger pickups and seized 60 weapons from the Afghan forces in the attack.

Few months back, a large number of Afghan forces suffered casualties in similar Taliban attacks in different districts of Kandahar.
