Suspects in Kabul money market robbery held

ABUL (Pajhwok): Nine suspects, including two policemen, have been detained in connection with a nearly $200,000 robbery case linked to the Sara-i-Shahzada money exchange market in Kabulinfo-icon City, police said on Tuesday.

The two policemen belonging to the 1st police district of Kabul city have been accused of dereliction of duty in the robbery case.

Meanwhile, police claimed arresting 395 individuals in connection with 235 various crime incidents during the past one month, in addition to seizing weapons and narcotics from them.

Lt. Gen. Mohammad Salim Ehsas, the 101st Asmai Police Zone acting commander, on Tuesday told a news conference that a seven-member group of organized thieves had recently obtained a shop against rent in the Sara-i-Shahzada money market.

The alleged robbers stole $190,000 and 450,000 afghanis, and some amount of foreign currencies from a shop in the market at night, but police were able to detain them and recover the stolen money.

Ehsas said the two policemen affiliated to the 1st police district were arrested in the case for dereliction of duty. Without going into details, he said the crime graph in Kabul had declined as compared to last year.

He said in the past one month alone at least 395 crime suspects were referred to judicial organs in connection with 235 different crimes, including murder, theft, mugging, carrying guns illegally and others.

According to him, the detainees included four would-be suicide bombers, on one who had been intending to attack security posts on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, and 75 others were drug smugglers.

He said the seizures during the past one month included 26 different kinds of weapons and eight vehicles.

Drugs seized during the period included 1.5 kg of heroin, three kilograms of opium, 63 kg of hashish, 293 kg of methamphetamine, 237kgs of methamphetamine and ecstasy containing pills also known as (Tablet K), 150 litres of alcoholic drinks, 2,160 bottles of beer.

The police commander also informed about throwing a multi-layer security blanket around Kabul City for the upcoming Eid Festival.

He said police along with other defence and security sectors would keep security for religious places, recreational and other areas.
