TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): A number of residents of central Uruzgan province say they want both the government and armed militants to avoid clashes in residential areas and using residents as human shield.

A large number of people on Friday arrived from Chora district at the Provincial Council (PC) office in Tirinkot, the provincial capital.

Last week, Afghan air forces struck a small bazaar in Sarab area of Chora district, with local officials claiming the airstrike killed dozens of Talibaninfo-icon militants.

But today the residents of Chora district, who visited the PC office, rejected the local government officials’ claims as “far from reality.”

They claimed all those killed and injured were civilians, including shopkeepers.

One of them, Abdul Raziq, said the airstrike hit participants of an Eid fair and shops in the bazaar.

He said his son was killed in the airstrike and 14 other people were wounded, all civilians.

Members of the provincial council condemned the attack on civilians and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

Deputy provincial council head Noor Mohammad Haqmal said the council was investigating the airstrike on civilians in Sarab area and the outcome of the investigation would be shared with the authorities concerned.

Uruzgan governor Mohammad Nazir Kharotai said families of the victims yesterday called on him at the governor’s house. He said he discussed in detail the airstrike with the visiting residents.

The governor said they were collecting information about the airstrike and a decision would follow.

However, he said the area where the airstrike took place was under Taliban control and sending a delegation there was almost impossible.

He claimed receiving reports about destruction of Taliban weapons cache and armored vehicles in the airstrike.
