Odierno lauds ANSF response to attack

WASHINGTON (PANinfo-icon): US Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno, on Tuesday praised the Afghan forces' successful handling of the Talibaninfo-icon attack on the Presidential Palace, hoping they would be able to maintain the security across the country.

“I am,” Odierno told Pentagon reporters at a news conference in response to the query if he was confident that Afghanistaninfo-icon would be more secure with its national forces leading nationwide operations.

“I see it as a positive sign as we continue to train and turn more responsibility over to them. I'm very encouraged by that. We still have some work to do, but I think by the end of 2014 they are going to be ready to protect the people of Afghanistan,” Odierno added.

The army chief of staff acknowledged the Afghan forces did an incredible job of repelling Tuesday's attack and killing the assailants. It was another example of the progress they had made, although there was concern the Taliban were still able to conduct those types of attacks, said.

He added the United States had committed itself to be in Afghanistan till 2024, but the number of troop presence post 2014 was yet to be decided. “Actually, we have said we're going to remain committed to Afghanistan through 2024. We haven't made a decision yet..."
