Asila Wardak elected as OIC human rights commissioner

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): An Afghan woman has been elected as a member of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

Asila Wardak received the most votes among the candidates from Asia, Africa and the Middle East during the election for OIC human rights commissioners. She is the first woman from Afghanistaninfo-icon to be appointed to the OIC commission.

The 13th meeting of the OIC began in Istanbul kicked off on Sunday and will continue until Friday. The two-day meeting of foreign ministers from member countries concludes today. Heads of OIC states will meet on Thursday and Friday.

Asila Wardak received her bachelor’s degree in the field of agricultural economy from the Kabul University before doing her master’s in international relations and diplomacy from the New Jersey University.

She has been working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul for the past seven years as head of human rights and international womeninfo-icon’s affairs, as well as deputy permanent representative to the UN.
